Fern Resort is THE best place for a simple family vacation that allows you to have fun, relax and food, all with a cottage-like style! Located just outside of Orillia, this super-fun resort has it all. You can rock climb, zip-line, swim, waterski, paddleboard, kayak, be hypnotized, catch a wild animal show, go fishing and so much more. Really, you can do anything at this resort, and they feed you too!
One thing I love about this resort is their programming. They have fabulous facilities, plus a sun plan and rain plan for every single day, to keep the kids happy and busy! Our kids loved the Playvillage. It really is a village, built for play. Its a safe gated area where the kids have their own splash pad, sandbox, tree-house, playground, pony rides, craft area and more, just for them. If you want, you can check your children there for as long as you need or they want, and relax. Its true.
Because of the ages of our children (we went with momstown Guelph), we let them stay at the Playvillage for a bit and then enjoyed the other parts of the day in the pool, the beach, watching the Wildlife Show, jumping on the trampoline, ziplining and sight seeing around the resort. As you can see, we were in our bathing suits, taking a water break, to catch the Wildlife show. They had turtles, an opossum (huge), a groundhog, a porcupine (getting petted below) and my favourite (not at all), a snake. But the kids loved this show and learned about the animals that are in their own backyard.
One part of our sightseeing walk one evening, we spotted this cute little guy (Ferrett-like, Muskrat) who was travelling along the rocks, just beside the lake, in search of food. He wasn't the least bit scared off by us and just kept on his journey. We could see (middle below) a pile of the scraps leftover from his crayfish snacks. This experience was so neat and exciting for the kids. A true nature walk!
There is no doubt that this resort really is family-focused. Even in the dining room, you have the same wait staff for the duration of your stay. This is perfect if there any special dietary needs or allergies in your family. The resort has thought of everything, all the necessities of a day at the beach are provided for you, you don't even need to bring beach toys or towels.
We really enjoyed our weekend at Fern and couldn't believe how fast the time went. We had an amazing time, with 4 kids, all 5 and under! This visit my daughter (age 4) was a little nervous to try paddle-boating or the boat tour this time but we will definitely be coming back to Fern again soon and will try even more activities in our next adventure.
