Wintery Art & Play

Every month, the momstown KW members join us at the Early Years Center for our all ages Art & Play program! This program is designed to allow children of all ages to laugh and learn all at the same time!

This month, with the Holiday Season surrounding us, we decided to learn how to make snowflakes! 

So, after a wintry tale and some playtime, we got out the scissors, markers, crayons, stickers and paper and let the kids (and parents) get to creating there own beautiful snowflakes!

The Night Before Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas,

When all through the house,

Not a creature was stirring,

Not even a mouse.

Unless that is you are at the monthly momstown KW Tales for Tots program! 

Then the tale would go something more like this:

'Twas the week before Christmas,

And all through momstown,

All the children were laughing,

There wasn't a frown! 

The children were all seated,
With plates and crayons,
Making special Santa plates,
Well...at least that was the plan.

With stickers and markers,
And crayons galore,
Tiny fingers went crazy,
but alas...there was no more! 

This month, Scholastic generously donated the book, The Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore. Illustrated by Barbra Reid, her brilliant Plasticine art breathes new life into the classic poem - with a Canadian twist!

Snow Much Science!

What's the worst part about being a kid in the winter? Mittens! 

How can you possibly have any fun with that newly fallen fluffy white snow when you're wearing mittens?! Sure sure, you can always make a snowman or go tobogganing...but momstown KW decided to take it one step further with in our weekly Laugh & Learn program!

This week, during Little Scientists, we filled large buckets with snow and let the kids explore, sans mittens!

They had so much fun making mini snowmen, using cookie cutters to shape the snow and driving the train through the snow mountains! Plus, we learned what happened when we dyed the snow!

This is the perfect way to discover colors! 1 drop of red...1 drop of blue...WHOA it's purple! 

This is a great wintertime activity for all ages! Babies, toddlers, school age and adults! So, next time it's too cold to go outside and play, why not bring the outside inside!

Kitchener-Waterloo Moms Love Inhuman by Kat Falls from Scholastic Canada

This month our momstown Kitchener-Waterloo Mama Book Club was sponsored by Scholastic Canada. We had the opportunity to read "Inhuman" by Kat Falls and we really enjoyed it.  We have a dedicated Book Club, with moms who look forward to choosing and discussing a new book every month.  This is the second time this year that we have a chance to read and review a book provided by Scholastic Canada.

 

Not all our group members would usually choose a Science Fiction read as this one, so we were pleased to read something that we might not otherwise read.  We were delighted about how easy of a novel this was to read, especially for busy moms.  And who can't relate to story of a woman dramatically trying to save her father?

 

 

In the wake of a devastating biological disaster, the United States east of the Mississippi River has been abandoned. Now called the Feral Zone, a reference to the virus that turned millions of people into savage beast-men, the entire area is off-limits. The punishment for crossing the border is death.

 

Lane McEvoy can’t imagine why anyone would risk it. She’s grown up in the shadow of the great wall separating east from west, and she’s curious about what’s on the other side – but not that curious. Life in the west is safe, comfortable . . . sanitized. Which is just how she likes it.

 

But Lane gets the shock of her life when she learns that someone close to her has crossed into the Feral Zone. And she has little choice but to follow. Lane travels east, risking life and limb and her very DNA, completely unprepared for what she finds in the ruins of civilization . . . and afraid to learn whether her humanity will prove her greatest strength or a fatal weakness.

 

 

Inhuman is the first novel in this series/trilogy and our moms are looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

momstown KW Kiss, Kisses Good Night at Baby Basics

Each month, momstown literacy sponsor, Scholastic donates 

a baby safe book to the Baby Basics program! 

This weekly program is the perfect place for moms with babies under a year old 

to get together and chat and bond, while creating their baby's first piece of art 

or learning about a topic relavent to their changing bodies or growing babies! 

This month, Scholastic donated Kiss, Kiss Good Night by Kenn Nesbitt. 

Surely this months winners will be curled up tonight reading this bedtime poem 

all about how mommy animals say good night to their little ones. 

D is for Decorating at momstown KW's Laugh & Learn's Alphabet Play

Each and every week, momstown KW's Laugh & Learn program alternates between Alphabet Play, Tales for Tots, Jr Chef and Little Scientist!

This week, it was time for Alphabet Play, which is deliciously sponsored by Alpha-bits Cereal!

This month, our featured letter was "Dd"! There were so many D possibilities it was hard to decide which one we wanted to make into a craft!

After much "debate" we "decided" on "D is for decorating" instead of "D is for Reindeer" (wink). Though we did get pretty creative on how to make a "D" into one!

So, out came the snowflakes, the pipecleaners, the glue, markers, sparkles and stickers and closely followed was the smiles as the toddlers decorated their snowflake!

These snowflakes all started out the same, but each quickly became its own unique masterpiece!

momstown Kitchener-Waterloo Welcomes a New Baby Program Coordinator!

Welcome to our new Baby Coordinator, Jacquelyn!

 

 

My name is Jacquelyn Wells.  Since becoming a first time mother to a beautiful baby girl, Madelynn Kennedy, I have dove into the world of discovery, play, education, stimulation and fun!  I have made it my mission to ensure that my daughter lives, laughs and loves!

I am thrilled to start working within the great organization that is momstown!  I look forward to being able to share my creativeness with other mothers, be there to offer a friendly smile to a new mom when its needed the most and help create a great bonding moment between mother and baby.  I am a firm believer that “it takes a village” and I am proud to become a member of that village.
