momstown KW Gets Crafty with Superworm!

Once a month, Scholastic sponsors momstown KW's weekly Laugh & Learn program!
This weekly program is great for any mom with a active family!
Bring out all the kids for a fun filled day of fun and learning!

This month at Laugh & Learn: Tales for Tots we read Superworm, by Julia Donaldson
If you love funny rhymes and brave heros, you will love this book!
Superworm is not your ordinary hero with massive muscles. Nope: he's super skinny.
But not weedy at all. When trouble strikes, this brave worm wriggles to the rescue.
He can turn into a life-saving rope, and squiggle into really tiny spaces.

After a reading this fun story, we made our own planes, trains and automobiles using
different sizes of squares, stickers and crayons!
Thank you again to scholastic for sponsoring momstown's commitment to
literacy and learning! Join us next week for another fun Laugh & Learn!

The Night Before Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas,
When all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring,
Not even a mouse.

Unless that is you are at the monthly momstown KW Tales for Tots program!
Then the tale would go something more like this:

'Twas the week before Christmas,
And all through momstown,
All the children were laughing,
There wasn't a frown!

The children were all seated,
With plates and crayons,
Making special Santa plates,
Well...at least that was the plan.

With stickers and markers,
And crayons galore,
Tiny fingers went crazy,
but alas...there was no more!
This month, Scholastic generously donated the book, The Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore. Illustrated by Barbra Reid, her brilliant Plasticine art breathes new life into the classic poem - with a Canadian twist!

momstown KW Hosts Tales for Tots with McDonalds!

momstown KW offers a weekly program, Laugh and Learn to all our members with a weekly rotating schedule between Tales for Tots, Junior Chef, Little Scientist and other special themes!

This week, for Tales for Tots, momstown teamed up with McDonalds to help promote their new limited edition books available with their Happy Meals! The 4 books include: The Goat Who Ate Everything, Deana's Big Dreams, Ant, Can't, and Dodi the Dodo Goes to Orlando.
These limited edition books help to deliver a nutritional message that's relatable to children and are available from November 1st until November 15th (while supplies last) in your children's Happy Meals!
The launch of books in the Happy Meal is part of McDonald’s ongoing commitment to evolve the Happy Meal to reflect customers’ changing wants and needs, while championing children’s happiness and well-being.  Happy Meal offerings include a Danino® Strawberry Yogurt, the choice of apple slices, small or mini-size French fries, and the choice of a low-fat dairy option like 1% white or chocolate milk.

This event was full of fun, nutrition and happy moms and children! As we all got to play in the new playplace, read our stories and eat our delicious apple slices and yogurt parfaits!
Thank you to McDonalds for helping to make this event a fun and nutritious success! Though everyone was a winner today, with a McDonalds swag bag full of goodies, congratulations to this lucky mom (expecting twins any day now) for winning a copy of Swamp Water by Robert Munsch!

Fox and Squirrel Join the Fun at Laugh and Learn: Tales for Tots in KW

Scholastic Canada donated a cute book, Fox and Squirrel to our Laugh and Learn: Tales for Tots program in September.

The book reads of a fox and squirrel who are great friends despite their differences.

After reading Fox and Squirrel, we made masks that represented the main characters in the book.

It takes half a paper plate painted either brown or orange to make the mask.
Then, cut out eye holes before using construction paper to make ears for either the fox or squirrel.
Finally, add teeth for the squirrel or whiskers for the fox and then your mask is ready for a straw fastened to the back.

The result is a super cute mask!

At the end of the day, we had play and social time and one lucky boy got to take the book home!

Join us next week at Laugh and Learn for Alphabet Play.

Kitchener Waterloo Tots ROARED Like Polar Bears at Tales for Tots with momstown KW

The aptly named book, The Very Hungry Bear, was momstown KW's book this month at Tales for Tots . It was generously donated by Scholastic Canada and then raffled off at the end to this lucky winner:

Who could resist making a super cute Polar Bear, just like the main character in this funny book?  This bear is so hungry and so helpful a the same time.  We loved how this book shows the difference in habitats between these 2 big bears, even when you are VERY HUNGRY and how helping out means you win too :)

Our theme this month at momstown KW was Polar Animals and this book and craft were a perfect fit!  Using just toilet paper rolls, cotton, glue, some googly-eyes and markers, we re-created our own versions of fluffy white polar bears.

My Friend Henry Joins momstown KW at Chapters Gateway for Tales for Tots Program

Every month Scholastic Canada generously sponsors the momstown program, Tales for Tots, held at Chapters Gateway, and donates a special book to give away to one special child!

momstown Kitchener-Waterloo moms and tots loved this month's brand new Philippe Beha story "My Friend Henry".  This is a story about a young boy looking for his best friend Henry.

He asks all his wildlife friends along the way until he finds Henry, who has a big surprise ready for him!  It really is a cute story about friendship.

After this great story, all the children got to make their own version of the Butchers Cat from the book. We used cardboard tubes and glued yellow construction paper around them. We then fastened the eyes, ears and nose and the children were able to draw or embellish the cats with marker, crayons and ribbon.
There was lots of fun and laughs with glue, paper and imagination!

Join us next month at Chapters Gateway when we read the story The Very Hungry Bear,  by Nick Bland.

A hilarious holiday story about a young girl named Julie
and how she still hasn't found her hidden Christmas presents this year!

After this great story, all the children got to make their own Christmas trees.
There was glitter and glue; beads and bells; and lots of laughter and gooey hands!

momstown Kitchener-Waterloo paints O is for Octopus at Chapters during Alphabet Play!

O is for Octopus, or at least a neat Ocean picture!
momstown Kitchener-Waterloo had so much fun learning about the letter O
during our Alphabet Play at Chapters in Kitchener.

After a quirky reading of "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" by Dr. Seuss
the paint came out and the sleeves went up!
It was time to create our own ocean picture with our Octopus prints!

Although this craft was sticky and gooey, sparkly and fuzzy and may have ended up more on mom than the paper, everyone had fun and put their imaginations to work to create a creative underwater masterpiece!

The final creations were works of art and fit for any aquarium,
even for Henry the "superkid" who didn't get messy!

So don't miss out on our next craft, momstown Kitchener-Waterloo is
at the Gateway Chapters every other Wednesday from 11-12
