People
like to chit chat – but how much of that chit chat do our infants really
understand? And how much do our children understand about the complex events
that they observe in the world around them?
TheInfant Studies Group at the University of Waterloo is interested in discovering
how children learn- specifically language and cognitive development. In our Labfor Infant Development and Language, we want to know how infants learn to
understand the speech around them. How do they learn the sounds of their
language, and how do they use those sounds to learn and understand words? In
our Developmental Learning Lab, we want to know how an infant’s mind develops
into the sophisticated mind of an adult. How do infants use probability to
guide their actions? How do they make and test hypotheses about their physical
environments?
We are looking for
children aged 3 months – 5 years to help us figure out these perplexing
questions and discover how children learn. Participating in one of our studies can be an enjoyable and engaging
experience for you and your child. You stay together the entire time, and as an
extra thank-you, your child will receive a small gift too!
During
your half hour visit to the lab, the researchers will tell you about the study,
answer any questions you have, and before the study starts your child will
spend some time playing to get comfortable in the new environment. During the
5-10 minute study, your child may listen to language sounds, watch a TV screen
with different pictures on it, watch a puppet show, or play a game with the
researcher.
