Snow Much Science!

What's the worst part about being a kid in the winter? Mittens! 

How can you possibly have any fun with that newly fallen fluffy white snow when you're wearing mittens?! Sure sure, you can always make a snowman or go tobogganing...but momstown KW decided to take it one step further with in our weekly Laugh & Learn program!

This week, during Little Scientists, we filled large buckets with snow and let the kids explore, sans mittens!

They had so much fun making mini snowmen, using cookie cutters to shape the snow and driving the train through the snow mountains! Plus, we learned what happened when we dyed the snow!

This is the perfect way to discover colors! 1 drop of red...1 drop of blue...WHOA it's purple! 

This is a great wintertime activity for all ages! Babies, toddlers, school age and adults! So, next time it's too cold to go outside and play, why not bring the outside inside!

Toddlers Make a Volcano at Laugh and Learn, momstown KW

The Little Scientists portion of momstown KW's Laugh and Learn program had a monthly theme of Pirates and Princesses this month.

 

We decided to make a volcano!

 

We taped a plastic cup to a paper plate with masking tape:

 

Then we painted it to look like a real volcano:

 

 

Next we mixed red food colouring with vinegar and added it to baking soda we had put in the volcano.

 

 

 

 

 

The result was a chemical reaction that cause the volcano to ERUPT!!

 

 

 

 

Next week at Laugh and Learn we are making Pirate Patch Pin Wheels for Jr. Chef. We hope to see you there!

Shadow Play at momstown KW Little Scientist Program

A great day for shadow play!

 

 

 

With our monthly theme of birds we used our hands to try bird shadows.

 

 

 

 

 

We made dogs and people and everything in between.

 

And we talked about the science behind the making of a shadow too!

 

 

Then it was play time.

 

And even the littlest participants had a great time.

Apple Stamps in September at Laugh and Learn and momstown KW

Our momstown Movers program has a new name: Laugh and Learn.

 

This new name better reflects the spirit of the program, which is geared to moms with more than one child of any age AND moms with toddlers aged 12 months and up.

 

Each week we will still be rotating through our fantastic pillar programs: Junior Chef, Little Scientist, Alphabet Play and Tales for Tots, as well as special programs every so often too.

 

 

This past week at Laugh and Learn: Little Scientists, moms and tots created art with apples!

Perfect for our monthly theme of Apples.

 

 

 

 

 

 

We observed the difference in apples we used and the different shapes they created when dipped in paint.

 

 

 

 

It was a fun and easy way to learn about observation skills used in science.

Potato Stamp fun at momstown Movers in Kitchener -Waterloo

Shapes is the theme this month at momstown KW.

 So, for Little Scientists we took ordinary potatoes and turned them into paint stamps!

 

 

 

There are easy to do !

 

1. Cut a large potato in half

 

2. Push a cookie cutter shape in the flat side

 

3. Use a paring knife to cut away around the cookie cutter

 

4. Dip the stamp into paint before pressing to paper.

 

 

Moms and tots alike, enjoyed this playful, painting fun.

At the end of our neat science display there was even more fun to be had with a bucket of toys to share with all our friends.

Can You Separate Sand and Salt? momstown KW Can!

Guess what we did at Little Scientists this month?

 

We separated sand mixed with salt.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Here's how:

• Mix sand and salt together

 

• Stir the mixture into water
• filter the water through a coffee filter

What you have left with is salty water and sand in the filter

 

Now, to get the salt back, boil the filtered water until nothing but salt remains!

 

Pretty cool huh?

Super Silly Putty Slimes Little Scientists

Today at Little Scientists we made Super Silly Putty.

We added cornstarch to water and mixed it up. The results we amazing!

The Super Silly Putty looked like liquid in the bowl but when we touched it it went hard.

Then when we picked it up in our hands, it melted again.

 A great experiment to learn about solids vs liquids and getting slimed!

Little momstown KW Scientists Conduct Magic Milk Experiment

This morning was a beautiful day to head to the park and play!  So that's just what momstown Kitchener-Waterloo did.... and that's not all.  We also learned and experimented with Milk!

  

Yes, I said milk.  Who knew milk would make a great foundation for a science experiment right? Well, I have to tell you that it makes the Coolest Kaleidoscope ever! And, its so simple, you can do this at home, with ingredients from the fridge & cupboard.  

All you need is some high-fat milk (homo or 2% works best), some food colouring and liquid soap!  And a little dabber of some sort like a straw or q-tip.  The experiment is as simple as putting some milk in a large dish, adding a few drops of food colouring to it (spread out) and then dab the dish soap into the food coloured spots and drag them around in the milk. The liquid soap forces the colouring out into the milk and you can make all kinds of colourful patterns and designs with your stirring and mixing motions.  Its almost like the food colouring is scared of the liquid soap, the way it moves away from the soap when dabbed into the colour.   

Not only were the kids fascinated with the Magic Milk this morning, but so was Mom.  I can see lots of Magic Milk experiments being conducted all over Waterloo Region this summer.  Note to self and readers.... food colouring stains!  I am so glad that I had Huggies Simply Clean Wipes handy to help me clean up the food colouring and liquid soap off the kids, and mostly me... Thanks Huggies!
